P1 After effect appraisal.

After effect apprasal

What went wrong? There were several problems within our filming, where we had to do several clips during the sequence where (Jess) had to jump up from the logs in fear of (Amber). Also we had to do each effect clip bit by bit because kept forgetting the lines now and then, and were startled by laughing.

What did you struggle with? -( within the terms of AE. ) I feel that I struggled with creating the motion tracking on AFTER EFFECTS while needing to track the eyes with the masks that I had to make for it.

What do you need to learn? -( skills techniques -) I need to learn more on how to create and generate masks within after effects and learn more within the software itself.

What assets do you need? - props - green screen - make up/ costumes? Possibly a wig to show a male character.  Crash mat for the tree falling scene. Makeup for the "animal" eg black face paints.

P1 VFX Final Eyes.

The clip above, is my final version of the eye effects, after three attempts i was fully happy with this one, after being shown correctly how to do the motion tracking.

P1. SCRIPT ASSESSMENT

P1 VFX test eyes

P1 VFX directions for eyes.

To create the eye effect i had to:

  1. open up the clip files into AE
  2. select clip 12 and drag it to composition
  3. open up the composition of clip 12
  4. created a new adjustment layer
  5. then used the eclipse tool to outline each of the eyes
  6. after creating the outlines i used the Distort-Liquify to create the drop on the eyes
  7. after that i then made another layer and added a full colour coverage to the clips, minus the selected eclipse areas and then changed the opacity just to give it a darkened look
  8. during this i tried to use the motion tracker as well to stabilise it but didn't do very well
  9. one doing this i rendered the clip then exported it
  10. Then uploaded to youtube.

180* degree rule.

In film making, the 180-degree rule (shown above) is a basic guideline to the on-screen spatial relationship between a character and another character or object within a scene.
An imaginary line called the axis connects the characters and by keeping the camera on one side of the axis for every shot in the scene, the first character will always be frame right of the second character, who is then always frame left of the first. If the camera passes over the axis, it is called jumping the line or crossing the line.

Rewritten script with shot types.

Rewritten Script

Notes from missed production meeting.

Who was present:

Dana and Amber

Agenda
Shot types
Script
New script?

We have decided on shot types for our script. We then read through the script that we have a couple of times and thought about how interesting it would actually be and decided that it didn't have much drama and effects. So we thought of coming up with a new script that would have a lot of action in and shows more powers and compare them.

Ideas for new script:
Set in the woods. 3 teenagers hang out and have a little party/get together and try to figure out all their powers. They hear a noise which ends up being someone that can turn into a creature. They all end up dying/disappear apart from one which ends on a cliffhanger.

Redrafted group script

Team production meeting

Team production meeting

Date: 18th November 2013

Who is present: Me (Charlotte) & Amber

Agenda: Script Assessment
              Script choice
              Ideas for redrafting

Story Choices:
Use the main character of my (Charlottes) story: Jay because we all felt that out of all main people he came across as having the most potential, and that also we could most likely to develop more ideas into the script of effects and scenes.
Ambers age range of characters due to the availability of ages in casting.

Broaden along the story line of ambers opening sequence of the "Crystals" that have powers inside, but change this to the powers being given to people ones that they've always wished for.

Ideas for redrafting: sit down and go through the contents of our scripts and add/change the effects and characters around but keep some of the scene settings as they are to generate more of a group work project instead of singular.

P1. Research into Recording Foley Sound and Sound Effects

What is a foley artist, what do they do and why are they needed?Foley artists are artists in which recreate the realistic ambient sounds of which are heard in films such as placing in the sound effects from things like skin gripping, ball gowns swishing ect. They are needed because its said that the mics are mainly places under clothing. And with this you can get problems such as interference and sounds picked up from around making in sound unrealistic. And the dialogue may not be complete, so you then need to re voice all the dialogue  and recreate the whole soundscape thats needed for the scene.
Explain the order in which the Foley artist creates the sound?
in order to recreate the sounds you have to know what is expected of the human mind and the audience watching, the reasons why are because we want something that sounds realistic. This is where using a studio and things related to the actual clip of sound you're remaking in order to record them step by step then to overlap them together. So anything thats moving on the screen comes across as a prop pass group of objects to do so.
What are the key skills and qualities foley artists need to have?
the keys skills needed to be a foley artists is that overal you mainly have to have a strong sense of creativity and imagination in which helps your mind work and be able to picture what sounds should actually be.

What is the advantage of using real objects to create sound FX rather than using digital production or sound libraries?
If we're recording within a certain location we're more able to find the sounds in which fit perfectly to what we want, such as putting microphones in the same area off woodlands but several feet apart, both recordings would sound similar but not identical, or by recording the sound separately in a studio and then over lapping to create the sound you want. But if we were to rely on something like a sound library, we may get things that we do not want and things that don't fit into the given flow or criteria in the sound we want.

P1: Recording Ambient Sounds and Dialogue

1) Recording Ambient sounds.

the recording of ambient sound is the process of trying to draw the viewers into believing that what they're are watching is something thats immensely real and not make belief. This is because every environment has its own unique sound and tone. An example of this could be that if  you were to film something in a busy city or a town hall, both would be different. For instance a city would have the full tone of white noise in the background, the possible jitter of people and traffic in the distance. But if you were inside somewhere like a town hall, all the sounds you'd hear in a city would be a slight murmur to the inside building that you're in.

Hard cuts are something in that are normally only used when something been set for a specific reason like in an effect, if we didn't use hard cuts then it would come across that the sequence we're watching would be flowing into something thats really jumpy from surrounding to surrounding and not at a nice flown pace with the blending that it needs like in music.

If we're recording within a certain location then we are able move around and find the sounds in which fit perfectly to what we want, such as putting microphones in the same area off woodlands but several feet apart, both recordings would sound similar but not identical. But if we were to rely on something like a sound library, we may get things that we do not want and things that don't fit into the given flow or criteria and creating off ness in the sound field we want.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire:within this the sound engineer gained the sounds for some shown in the video below by going out into the jungle and places like malawi to get the atmosphere and sound of things from the ocean, the skies brisk tone of wind, the moment of trees and the fighting of baboons.

To do so he placed two stereo pairs in the same area but a large distance away from each other to gain the full surrounding of sound needed from a range of different locations in a 360 format. He then used a software called Atmos which allows you to use panning and the range of three dimensional sound to able you to gain sounds which are coming from above and all around you.

if we were to record a sound for a certain setting and didn't apply the forms of ambient noise to it we would just gain something that sounds forced and manipulated to the human ear, and something that doesn't sound very true or life like. BUt if we add in the ambient sounds we need then we're able to make something thats more realistic to the location in which we really want.

Recording Dialogue:
when we record dialogue there are many things in which we need to consider and take to mind about how we're going to record and edit the sounds that we want into a certain clip. Examples would be recording something straight from a microphone and then moving forward to just simply dub or loop with sound we've gained.
There are several differences within dubbing and looping sound, with dubbing we're able to record voiceovers in things like montages where someones talking in a thought process, so we hear the thoughts but not see them spoken. But then with looping if you were to watch back a piece of footage you can then continue to learn the words in which you need like a scene in a movie thats being filmed by both reading and talking it over to gain the perfect dialogue.

Demonic Morph

P1 Use of Music Analysis.

What does music do?
  • creates an atmosphere
  • sets the scene
  • motivates both the audience and characters
  • creates a certain mood
  • generates the emotion and feeling within the scene
  • emphasises action
  • helps the narrative flow
  • helps with the emotional state of mind
  • establishes the location/culture/time
  • establishes characters theme and motive.
Terminology.

  • diagetic - characters can hear
  • non-diagetic - post production - characters can't hear
  • sound bridge - leads into the next scene
  • contrapuntal sound - opposite - horrible tones - happy tones
  • sound effects
  • aural motifs
  • character themes
  • cacophony and discordance
  • sound narrative
  • sound scape
  • major and minor tones
  • sonic wallpaper - creates the setting with only sound
Submarine film clip analysis.
Actor - Oliver.

Purpose
  • to show a montage of relief within the phase of flashbacks
  • creates a background with sonic wallpaper usage
  • helps the narrative of Olivers voice flow
  • reveals clues about Oliver himself.
The purpose if to show us that Oliver is the main person within  and it helps us see the use of sound to create a fully relaxed setting which comes across to use via the relaxed music in the flashbacks of thoughts that he has and creates a large emphasis among them.

Elements
  • tempo - andante' (walking pace)
  • volume - is a general medium throughout
  • genre - classical
  • instrumentation - strings
  • tone - relaxed
The elements of music within the clips show using the Orchestral theme help us to realise what a relaxed process of narrative thats being told to us, and this helps set the scene by using a mythical but steady pace of tone in minor keys.
The music has a strong busy tone to it thats gives a phase the memories are never resting into a set in the melody we hear. It also helps reflect on the process of his thoughts and helps us to see that his character is mildly dreaming 99% of the time we see him and is pushed into the relaxed sense we hear.

Meaning
  • shows what he's doing compared to others
  • shows the meaning of someone who cannot find who they are
  • the thought process in which fits the music to the story Oliver's telling
  • sincere to how he sees the world through his own eyes
  • the idea of subjective and consistent even when classifying comical memories

P1. MISFITS DIALOGUE ANALYSIS

P1. MISFITS DIALOGUE ANALYSIS

UNIT 50: AO 1 Understand how sound elements are used in media products.
Learners analyse THREE sound elements used in media products, including:
a) purpose
b) elements
c) meaning

Dialogue:
1) What is the purpose of the dialogue used?
The purpose of which the dialogue is used is to establish the different personalities of the characters across to us by showing us what their like in the clip via body language and speech.
Also the purpose of the clip is to give us the story, the story behind whom they really and possibly a story of narrative.
It sets the terms of the program and gives us a simple genre of time, like the period of which they're in because of the technology and the fact that each of them are on probation.
I think there's also the purpose of entertainment, because from the opening clip we're taken through humor and given the terms of amusement and the establishment of comedy.

2) Analyse each character's dialogue looking at register, vocabulary, accent, tone and volume. And explain what it tells us about them as a character in terms of class, social background, personality.

Nathan:

Always has a mischievous smirk or his face, as seen in the image aside taken from the watched clip. Has a lot of sarcasm. Cocky attitude. Playful. Polite. Condescending. Natural. Open minded. Snarky jerkass.
Mocking tone of voice, the following quote shows apart of his personality. " Yeah, but what if they're right? No offense, but I'm thinking some people are just born criminals."
Volume and accent: He has a strong southern Irish accent which makes him sound rhythmic as it's soft, a very clear volume of speech but always trys to dominate the banter of conversation and be the center of attention. He's a very clear spoken guy. He talks in full grammar unlike some of the others we see in the opening clip for example like Gary because its not general small talk thrown at you it comes across as being really laid back.
Non UK. Classless and different.

Vocabulary- vulgar and pushes the boundaries, by interfering with everything gets said by making comments to other people about what they say and questions each and everyone little this that gets said. But he doesn't swear. Witty and has a certain idea of intelligence. Counter argumentative = argues against all points made.

Overall I think it tells us that Nathan is a very easy going gentle person with an atrocious cocky personality who has the idea of dominating other people and likes to be the center of attention but he would never admit to it. I think he's also insecure because he acts like someone he's not due to the sarcasm and annoyingness he generates and gives across to us as an audience watching him. And he comes across as lonely due to the stares of emotion he gives, and the attention that he wants to himself.

Alisha:  is a young careless girl who really doesn't care about her attitude towards things. from the start we can see that she likes to show off her body by the way in which she sort of boosts herself up when she's changing into her probation clothing.
Shes dainty, overlooked, childish, playful, flirty, and a show off and irresponsible.

Volume and accent: her accent comes across to me as cockney because she doesn't seem to have anything else revolved around it besides the fact that she seem quiet and innocent but there's an edge to the way in which she says things to people, like a sort of out there Londoner. Her volume fits her really well as a person because she's not loud and she's not vibrant for example when she's speaking on the phone to her friend she's really casual and laid-back a dainty about what shes doing, but whilst shes in the background of other people you cannot really here her over Nathan and Gary fighting together.

Vocabulary: she has a very poor sense of vocab to the fact which makes her seem slightly chavy but it suits her really well, due to the fact that it fits in with who she is and her background of being a possible player with the guys, and a major flirt with others, and a joker also but it helps her stand her guard and not look so small.

I think that Alisha has made herself look really silly and pathetic with the way she acts in this, because she comes across as being a really sweet and innocent person being thrown into the possibly category of a slag, and someone who sleeps around and finds everything on earth attractive. She's a girl who uses her body emotions to draw things to her and to make friends with her attitude of being a typical flirt. But also very strong.

Curtis: athletic looking, and sounding, he comes across as a butch person, hates being placed in the company of other people but then also seems really laid back about things. causal attitude towards things, mindless, thoughtless, strong.

Volume and accent: Curtis comes across to me as having a causal everyday street talk language and speaks like you'd expect him too because he has a fairly upper class value to his grammar the volume is highly not what we'd expect from him as he looks like the quiet type but he really isn't and this makes him stand out due toe the fact that he's and athletic person it makes him bold and loud, the accent he proceeds shows us that he's probably from a well brought up area, he has a deep tonal London/English voice which portrays his attitude of probation.

Vocabulary and tone:  He has a very clear speech of grammar, and knows how to mix words to confuse people. The tone of voice he has shows great attitude because he speaks for what he believes in and know that he's better then other people around him due to being a famous athlete, regardless of being convicted this doesn't change his body language or anything. But he like Nathan like's to draw attention to himself, but he's also a really laid back person from how we see him in the clip as causally slouching against all means, not paying attention.

Overall i think that from what I've seen that Curtis is someone who knows how to handle his own battles but hate the company of being around others who are literally scum to him from the past offences in which they've proceeded. And also that he's a person who takes things strongly and to heart but also someone that's laid back and can enjoy a  good laugh once he knows people.

Gary:   short tempered, small minded, annoying, easily aggravated, everyday chav, lead on easily, takes things seriously, lower class.

Volume and accent: Gary comes across as having a very rough accent which i think shows that he may've possibly been brought up area, and falls into the stereotypical brand of being a chav, due to the way he acts among himself and also the attitude he shows and the roughness of what he's like around others but also sounds as if he's an actor trying to put on a cockney gangster type of talk. Meanwhile his volume is not what you'd expect because its loud, clear and also vibrant across the whole clip, he's one of which likes to be shown as strong and bold against others and he's able to dominate over people especially Nathan which comes out as a bad thing when they start fighting instantly.

Vocabulary & tone: Garys tone of voice is a very short tempered aggressive one, and we can tell this from the way he acts around other, and example would be when they're out on probation painting, and without reason he kicks over a can of paint when just one little thing goes wrong around him, it give me the impression that he's not the sort of nice genuine person he looks like, whereas inside he's spiteful and vicious to other people and has to big himself up to prove being boss.
His vocabulary is extremely vulgar and we're able to see this within moments of watching, when he says something to Nathan about "ripping his throat out" and then getting into a fight, he didn't like that fact that Nathan was one to argue back among any purpose and joined in the argument of the probation worker in-charge calling the bunch of them scum.

From what i've seen and analysed about Gary is that he's a very hot headed guy, who likes to get his own way with everything he does, but he hates it when other people try to look bigger then the person he is or they are. My reasons would be that when he fights with Nathan he doesn't back down, he's someone who has to prove the points and facts right to win them over. Also he's come across as being your everyday typical "gangster" style chav with the political grammar he uses mixed up into slang.
Kelly: strong minded, shy overwhelming emotion, but has issues with herself and who she is via getting classed as a typical every day chav, loud, feisty, honest, mouthy and always worried about what people think of her.

Volume and accent: Kellys volume of which we can see is rather loud and ferocious, we can see this because when she talks shes not a quiet character, everything she says we can hear and due to each and every-word being loud and clear. But also this could be something that she does for herself to make other understand who she is and the class of her upbringing as she comes across as your everyday chav with bad grammar. But she's genuinely a really loud person at heart and means well to others.
I think that her accent may be something around the areas of Scottish because it's really deep and vibrant, but then again i don't understand how you could be a Scottish chav, but it makes her sound really butch and manly overall together, also it fits well with her though, because it dominates her as a person and the loudness in which she has.

Vocabulary and tone: Kelly's vocabulary doesn't define her very well, it makes us see that she's not the brightest of the bunch, but we're able to strongly understand what she says. But she's very demanding with the words that she uses, it shows that she's a strong person who doesn't take grief from others but it's also rough vocabulary due to her accent and her 'chav' category. Her tone is rather laid back, and that she doesn't really care about what she says to people she just wants to show herself as something better to others.

Simon: shy, troubled, quiet, mysterious, unknow.

Volume and accent: with Simon it's really hard to actually be able to tell anything from who he is, because he doesn't talk at all in the first 2 opening minuets, so his volume comes across as being a quiet secluded person who keeps himself to himself. This also effects knowing what his accent is but if we watch further on it's actually quiet deep and casual towards anything you might suspect of him overall.

Vocabulary and tone: Simons tone shows to us that he's someone who keeps himself to himself because even when Nathan refers to him as being "weird kid" he doesn't even respond to him he just turns and looks with a sad mystical serious face and he just stands there looking sorry for himself, and just lets things go with the flow throughout.
We cannot really tell anything about the vocabulary due to the fact that he doesn't talk, but i think that if he was to talk in this clip he would be someone with a very clear tone.

Overall i think that Simon is someone of which comes across as a very shy person who's put himself into the class of not being able to talk to other people properly as he looks like he has very strong insecurities with himself, which makes it difficult for him to be social with others, and perhaps there are things in his life we don't yet know about.

Sound Effects of Drive.

Basics of the clip :A getaway driver (Ryan Gosling) waits for two criminals to commit a burglary. The Driver has a strict rule - he gives anyone who hires him a 5 minute window to commit their crime and get to the car or otherwise he'll leave them).

Purpose :
To build tension, what's going to happen within the situation and the thoughts of things going wrong within the time scale they were given.

The questions of things that are going round in their heads among the radio and the constant time clicks of the watch.
But the clip gives us information but not each moment of it informs us.
It establishes the genre, because it gives us the tension that we would expect of a crime scene from the points that there's police and a murmur of suspense music, and people in black masks.
It sets time also, from the quick speed and time rush given.
Also it's a form of dramatic entertainment.

Sounds:
The constant murmur of the police radio in the background > not knowing where they are.
The watch clicking on timer and making suspense of speed.
The alarm of which goes of in the building, means that someones aware of the robbery.
The ball game on the car radio making a laid back effect.
The sudden gunshot gives a broad effect by taking the sullen quietness of the night.

a) The ticking watch>  this ticking watch had a very dull pitch to the scene and gave of a dramatical effect, but the volume was something included that made it really suspenseful because it was there in the background among other noises. And the tone was something different because it was constant and repetitive.
b) The radio>  this didn't have much input on the clip part we watched but further on it related into a story and but the pitch of it made it stand out over other sounds input within this. But the volume made it more interesting because it took away some of the drama. An it gave of the tone of something different and made the scene more unique.
c) The police radio scanner> the radio was such a full input on the clip due to the deep pitchingbecause there was such and effect of worries  from it due to the fact that you could hear them police talking but you couldn't see them. And the volume was minimal but was overhead of all sounds and gave you thoughts about where they could be and what could happen. The tone was strong, as you could get a basic description from them and also was distinctive across the clip.
d) Environmental sound (alarm, traffic, car engine, police siren).> the pitch of environmental sounds were not really anything major as they're everyday sounds we can hear but all at different spaces, so the sounds all counteract each-other.  The volume was a basic over was mid tone high level city sound, but it was quiet and fitted into the clip really well. And the tone of them all worked well.
I think that overall all the sounds together really have the clip a great theme of suspense due to the fact that they all relate to the same thing and fitted in with the genre in which they are and made it seem like a chase in real like and made us be able to imagine ourselves from things like the suspense of the clock ticking about how much time they were going to have and the tension it gave because the sound was overwhelming as not one had the same volume or pitch.

Point Break Sound Mix write-up

POINT BREAK MIX

How to export > options can be found in the menu under File > Export
Format- hp264
^ changes preset dialogue > YouTube hp1080p> Double click output name to change and then simple chose where to save your work.

This project was very new to me because i've never used the software that we produced the sound clip on, because i was unfamiliar with this i decided to do a 30 second snippet of the full clip so i could spend time putting more sound effects into that space of the clip. It was hard to generate the right sounds to include within this, because we had to get the timing right with the movement and the things that we could see going on. This caused a problem for me as i wasn't really able to find the right sounds at the right time, but once i got going i was able to get myself into the task to create something which i thought was rather good for a first attempt.
I think that the final piece i generated sounded okay, but for someone whose never used premier pro before i feel that if i had spent more time on this in the future and known what the software was before hand then maybe i could've spent longer on the clip and made something much better. /
Overall i would say that i did enjoy doing this, but it's really not my criteria

P1. MISFITS ANALYSIS

P1. MISFITS ANALYSIS
Source:http://www.channel4.com/programmes/misfits/4od#3018432

Our task within this is to watch Episode 1 Series 1 of Misfits and to mark down as many visual effects we can see during the time period of the program.

Visual effects
1. 02:25 could be the possible effect of a green screen over lay animation use of bold objects and backing.

2. 02:25 onward there's the visual effect of and overlay giving a rustled old paper effect.

3. 04:36 shows a visual effect of a transparent cloud over lay to generate the thunderstorm

4. 04:50 this shows a bolder of some sort dropping from the Sky this would've been created out of shoot due to the effect and sound it needs to give.

5. 05:00 someone would've been needed to create the sudden water splurge of camera.

6.  From 05:00 continuing we can see many things from the bolder, rain, storm clouds and objects falling. These would've been done via green screen and importing fresh layers.

7. 06:10 the throwing of all characters Ono darkness. Visual effect of a green screen movement into a black atmospheric background.

8.  06:22 - 06:40 the lightning is and over lay added into the shot.

Editing and shots.

Media: continuity editing
Creating a flow of movement which makes a series of events
Everything we see is relatively edited:

180• line
-------•--------•-------
Have to keep to the side of the 180• rule
This cannot be broken other wise it will cause disorientation
Breaking is like a fouth wall

Eyeline match - the direction of sight then to another shot of what they're looking at

Cross cutting - parallel editing
Between the times there are a cross cut of maybe two things happening, like buying one thing and someone buying another

Match on action-
Eg following someone opening a door and matching the door opening in the other side of the door ect in line with each side.
