P1. COMPOSING FOR FILM

Links used for research:

Five Point Guide on how to compose music for a film.

  1. Engage with the film you're making sound for.
Start by watching the film once, to discover the story, then watch it again,  so you start seeing the different things and elements that you'll need, get into the rhythm of the film and relax.
  2. Watch the clip back without sound.
Do this by watching back the clip without sound and think about how you're imagining the atmosphere and setting for each scene and then think about the props you'll need to create it.
  3. Know what the Director wants.
Listen to what the director is saying when talking about the music. 9/10 the movie director does not know much about the music that you'll need in terms of how to set the mood for the scene. Such as the  director talking about how they need a tense moment in the music sense when a slasher is creeping up on someone mysteriously or how the music needs to be light and cheerful when the scenes happy.
  4. Stick to the story.
As you're watching the clip in silence to keep the imagination going remember you need to stick to the story line fully so there's the right pace of sound for people to understand as well not just yourself.
  5.  Be original.
it can get frustrating when a director limits you, just like any project where creative minds have to learn to work together.  There are hundreds of tracks available for use for a one-time fee. Make sure your music reminds the director why they've opted for working with a live performer instead of paying for pre made sounds.

Describe how Hans Zimmer and Christopher Nolan worked together to create the music for the Dark Knight?
The main thing about them working together shown in the video above was working to create the horror ambience for The Joker. Nolan had been sending Zimmer still aimages of horror themed clowns to boost his with inspiration over the time period they both talked about the tension that was needed and both realised what they wanted to create the feel of The Joker lurking in the shadows.
What was the process that Hans Zimmer used to come up with the music?Hans Zimmer decided to use music which was upon a very minimalistic tone that could point blank say what he wanted in the drone of string sound vibes.
What was Hans Zimmers intention when making this soundtrack?
Hans wanted to create something that would be distort to other people among the feel of The Joker and something that was uneasy and uncomfortable for viewers in the pact of the disturbing character he shows.
What qualities did Hans Zimmer want the music to have ?
-lots of strong tension.
-minimalism in The Jokers theme.
-punk and rock influences in The Jokers look and feel.
How do you feel about the final score and explain why you feel it works/doesn’t work.I think that overall the final score in which was given worked very well because it gave of they great sense of mystery that they intended to give us as an audience and the power of The Jokers character because it's not a tone which is of cheery detail it full on deep and dark, so it portrays the characteristics really well.

PROJECT ONE FINAL CLIP.

P1 Effects for clip.

This shows the timing plan for the Fireball thats being fired at (Adam) Jay's character.
It's set so that the turbulence of it comes in on a set time ratio with both keyframes and anchor points for movement.
The Fireball is based in a new masked layer amongst the top of the clip.

The following here is the effect in wich is set out in the timeline for (curtis) Blake to dissapear to dust. Using a mask and backgournd layer to do this, then anchoring the mask for the Adobe After Effects CC Scatterize.

P1: Friday, 31 January 2014 Production meeting.

Present: Charlotte(me), Dana and AmberTime: 2:40pm
Date: 31st January 2014
Reason: Re planning of script.

Topic - Script and shots
We need to decide if we are keeping the script and story we are doing now or change it.

Ideas:
- Jay gets picked on by Blake for not knowing his powers. Blake - Fire power, throws fire at Jay (dodging the fire)
- Alisha hits Blake with lightning to stop him
- Heavy footsteps, everyone looks around
- Alisha thinks its Blake messing around
- Foot steps get louder
- Alisha screams
- Jay and Blake panic
- They run, Blake freaks out and fireballs Jay
- Jay runs away from Blake, Blake gets dragged up
- Jay runs behind a tree, tries to figure out his power
- Keep the ending

P1: Rough cut Lightning - After Effects - How i did it.

The following information shows screen captures and steps of how i did the lightning footage scene for my projects rough cut.

Open up Adobe After Effects, and go to file > import > file.

Once i was into my documents I went through my files to get to the clip of which i wanted to import.
Once i found my file i the opened it up into AE.
Once opened in AE, I dragged the MOV down to the little icon which looks like a filmstrip, this is what makes it into a composition e.g easier to edit the clip. This then changes the workspace below to show you what formats you have available, in my case the MOV and the Composition.
I dragged the composition down into another workspace. BUT because i want to do an effect, i need to create a layer which is compatible to what i need, so i opened up a new solid layer and named it to which i wanted "Lightning"

Once i'd done this in my workspace the screen changed to a black colour and a new layer in the timeline was created amongst the top of the clip.
Show in blue and red.
Now the important part, finding a preset for the lightning.
The one i used was the advanced lightning because it gave more of a drastic feel and colour to my scene.
After double clicking on Advanced Lightning, you'll see that the workspace changes and the Bolt appears. When you've done this you're then further able to change the movement and can also add in effects over the top and even more layers to give more Bolts depending on how many you want and the atmosphere you're wanting to create.

I was after a really life self explained moody heartless scene where i decided that i would input more layers as which can be seen in the evidence photos.

To change how the lightning was placed and so it moved i used the keyframes to help with this, and also i used something in the effect controls that ables me to change the directions and the forking of the lightning to suit my work.

P1: Rough Cut Production meeting

Date: 30th January
Present: Charlotte (me) & Dana Holloway.
Reason: Plans for final.
Time: 15.00pm

Problems:
- We need to redo the audio due to the background noise given over the top and also people didn't know the script very well so this needs improving amongst the script.
- We realised that we have missed some shots, fair few missing.
- Haven't figured out the fall back effect fully or rotoscoping.

What we need to do:
- Film the scenes that are missing to catch up with further work needed.
- Record audio using the separate microphone to avoid background noise.
- Find better tutorials for the fall back scene or somehow get them to do it fully if this is okay amongst health and safety issues.
- Organise when we can film and record the audio with fellow actors.

We only can film Wednesdays and Thursdays as that's when we and both actors are free. We have spoken about the fall back and are going to ask the actor (Adam) if he is willing to do it and figure out how to make it safe to do.

P1: Rough Cut - Feedback & Appraisal

Peer feedback sheets for rough cut.
1: By Christofer Yarwood
2: Evie Heffer

Own Appraisal:

Audio
List the strengths and weakness for the dialogue, sound FXs and the music.
dialogue was not able to be heard over the music and sound extras that i added
- strong background noise
- dialogue missing
- sound FX at the start gives a good opening
- ^ creates a good deep effect of suspicion
-  the own done scream sounded like it was far away and not close by
What aspects do you intend to improve and how?
The aspects of which i want to improve would be near enough everything to do with the sound due to the fact that we filmed the rough cut in short notice of getting actors.
What i would do if i had to do this again i would use a separate microphone to gain the dialogue and the background noise should be looked at to see if it can be lowered in db to create less noise in the footage itself. And to change the depth of the backing music.

Special Effects
List the strengths and weakness for effects in terms of technical quality, authenticity and how they fit into the narrative.- poorly created and rushed time for the VFX of lightning.
- quality key was average

- technicality was good for the usage of adjustment layers and presets to create the clip of the lightning with the keyframes along side.
- the strength is that it fits into the scene
-weakness is that you dont know the story to why theres lightning.

What aspects do you intend to improve and how?
I intend to improve the aspects of the VFXS by taking time time i have on my own to practice at home in my free time, so that when it comes to doing the final editing in a few weeks for the full version that im then able to put in all the full effects that i need.
Sequence
List the strengths and weakness for effects in terms set dressing, acting, composition, editing.
- Acting problems, scripts were not known fully this caused mistakes.
- The Jump effect took a lot of stress and hassle and was not thought through in enough detail.
- The dressing was good because it was fairly casual but fitted the characters well.
Composition was awful, there wasn't much effort put in in my own honest opinion.
-Editing was good, but could be improved a lot.

Does the narrative make sense? The narrative is in sequence but personally to myself i dont think that it makes sense on my own terms because from my feedback it made me realise that it wasn't very understandable and didn't fit right in some areas of footage.

Does the action flow?
The action flows throughout the whole clip but some bits were rather jumpy and to fast.

 Is it entertaining?
Some parts could come across as comical more then horrific, but honestly no it's not entertaining.

What aspects do you intend to improve and how?
I intend to have a production meeting with my other team members to take into action each others opinions on which we could sort out, because the footage was all over the place and roles need to be taken seriously.

P1. Use of music in film - legal considerations

1) Right of use.
What is the difference between publishing rights and recording rights?

The difference between recording and publishing rights are that with publishing its something thats from the people in which own the copyright label to the certain piece of music, and the lyrics and composition within it. And the version of publishing only exists if the lyrics and words are written down.
With recording the rights it's the people who performed the version of music in which we want to use. An example would be for instance the sound recording copyright within the pianists recording of one of Beethoven's sonatas.
How would you go about clearing a piece of music for use in your film?
if we were to go about clearing a piece of music for our films, it would depend about the extent of copying that's taking place. Because if you're wanting the actor to just sing a few lines from a song then it's said to be unlikely that you would need to go about finding clearance for it. But then on the other hand if your actor was to sing the whole song then you would have to go about finding clearance as you would be reproducing the music that someone else owns. So if this was the case you'd have to find out who owns the rights to the music you're using by contacting the main publisher shown.
Can you use music in your sequence if the composer has died?
if a composer has been dead for the sum of over seventy years then it's said that the copyright terms would have expired so there would be no need to seek clearance for the composition that you want but we'd need to obtain clearance from the right holder to the recording.

What is incidental music?
incidental music is wheres there's music played within the background like a jukebox in a pub, because it's unconditionally and unintentionally there it would be classed as incidental to the work you've made.
This has to be taken carefully because sometimes background music in a film is referred as incidental music. However if the music playing in the background is clear and playing loudly ect, then its being used in the sense of copyright, so therefore you'd need to get full clearance.
2) Creative commons.
What is Creative Commons?
the creative commons is an organisation of which uses many several licences to expand the range of things which can be classed as free to use, things that we can share and use legally. This nowadays is used on a large majority of music because a lot of music is licensed and comes across that we cannot use it due to copyright infringements if we use music in public projects and also we cannot use it because its unusable.

Why does it exist?it exists to counter a very strong structure that restricts us when it comes to using most music. This is because the want to offer an alternative to us as people but depending on the licence certain music can be used by anyone.

Choice of music:
the music in which i chose is one of which i used as the backing track of sound for a project. The reason why i picked this one is because there's a strong mysterious ambience tone with a steady deep beat to it and it gives of thoughts of something thats rather eerie and mysterious to mind.
This music was created by Klankbeeld and as shown on the photo below has a Creative Commons stamp, so therefore the track is licensed and anyone who uses it cannot change it and needs to give credit to them.

P1 Problems during rough cut.

1. The weather has been rather wet so filming has been delayed due to being outside.
2. The availability of everyone being around for filming at the same time due to different time tables.
3. Groups bickering.

The outcomes of this will have to be that filming will have to be done on days that the weathers actually okay if this isn't possible then we will have to make do with this due to the short time schedule we have for next week.
The availability of others in the group has been mildly discussed and talked about to solve being here at the same time.
And well the group bickering will lower over time as the week has been a lot of work and some people have been absent so the filming had been delayed and this made problems.

P1 Production meeting

Present me and dana:
Time: 9.00am
Reason: general discussion.

Today me and dana went round college seeing if we could find anyone to be our actor or blake, the outcome was that most people had lessons during the time that we wanted to film on thursdays.
If it comes to it and we cant find a male actor last minuet we will have to see if Amber will act and change the story line to a female character along side the others.

We also talked about how we should take action within the fall back scene and how long the editing might take.

P1 Practice effect - Lightning

To do the practice footage i watch a few tutorials on youtube and the one of which i watched is seen below, the reasons for which are because it was easy to follow, and adjustments can be change easily along this.

This is the video of which i managed to do during the lesson as my practice, the only problem with this is that the footage has rendered, and is in slow motion so this would need to be corrected if happend in the actual final filming.

Risk Assesment - Ideas and plans

In todays lesson me and dana took into consideration the things in which we were told during the talk we were given about Health and Safety in the college grounds and the risks that could come along side many problems.

Within our script its been shown that there are at least three different obstacles that we needed to sort out so we decided that we would do something about these and take a trip to see Gary the site manager.

While we went and saw him we spoke about the issues that would be caused about the bikes giving the risks of being in the way for certain scenes not juts because they'd make a mess but because theres the risks of tripping and them falling onto actors or being knocked and then damaged.

The outcome of talking about the bikes came to the conclusion that if they're parked there and are able to be moved that we can move them if not then we'll have to make do with this.

The next thing we spoke to Gary about was the ground below the area which we need to use for the Fallback scene and another thats the running scene, this was just a simple "clean the area up" answer.
So me and dana we round the woods and the area to see what there was wrong and the things we need to help to keep anything from glass, sticks, logs and litter out the way so they dont cause any dangerous
hazards to us.
In consideration to the fall back scene, we went to the sports centre and spoke to staff there about using a crash mat for the fall back scene, but the outcome was that the crash mats are unable to be taken outside due to the fact that they're wearing out and are easily damaged.
SO...we've decided that for the fall back, the back doors to the sports centre will be blocked of around the time of 15:00 or an earlier time so that we can use the crash mat still but, we will have to see how the turns out as we will have to include a lot of rotoscoping and green screening.

P1: New location for script.

We decided that we would use the woods at the back of the college for our re-shoot as it is a lot bigger and has more places to film.

The inside of the woods and surrounding

Risk areas in and around the woods
